Department of International Communication
The School cultivates talented people who possess a global perspective and
capabilities and who can contribute to international society. To this end, students study
areas of specialty from three departments and we have also created an
interdisciplinary curricula by establishing five courses that cut across the three
departments. We also focus on foreign language education.
|
This is a new social science department that was created
based on a new philosophy that is appropriate for the era of
global communication. We nurture students who have the
ability to communicate and understand other cultures, or
international communicators who are able to act as a bridge
between various cultures. With the progress of globalization
today, international communication is receiving more and
more attention.
From diplomatic policy to conversations with friends,
communication studies is the study of how communication is
conducted and about its principles and methods, etc. In the
Department, students begin by (1) learning several languages
as a basic tool for international communication and by (2)
obtaining the ability to accurately understand what the other
is trying to say and the ability to accurately express oneself.
Based upon this acquisition, students learn about the "rules"
found in culture that enable communication. By learning that
there are various cultures and by acquiring the ability to
understand them, students become international
communicators.
In the Department, students learn theoretical fundamentals
such as international communication theory, comparative
cultural studies, and language science studies in the first and
second years. Some classes, such as Outline of
Communication, are conducted in English. As a rule, the
Department adopts a policy of small class sizes in its
education.
Graduates of the Department are able to succeed in
international organizations such as the United Nations,
NGOs, public offices, municipal governments, and
departments at corporations related to PR or international
affairs. They are also expected to be engaged in
interpretation or translation as specialists in communication.
