ABOUT AOYAMA GAKUIN UNIVERSITY(AGU)

A National Reputation for Excellence

Aoyama Gakuin University is a nationally renowned leader in Japanese higher education. Established in 1949 as the flagship institution of the larger Aoyama Gakuin school system, the university boasts generations of graduates that have become leaders in fields ranging from arts and athletics to business and national politics. Aoyama Gakuin, a comprehensive educational institute encompassing all levels from kindergarten to university, was founded in 1874 by American missionaries based on Christian faith. It continues to carry that legacy today with its distinctive emphasis on instilling a commitment to service and an international outlook into its students. In addition to providing high level instruction in specialized fields across 11 schools and 25 departments, the university strives to cultivate “servant leaders” that possess both the knowledge and character to effectively serve their communities locally and globally.

Combining cutting-edge innovation with a rich tradition of teaching and education

With a reputation for its quality of education and cosmopolitan ambience, Aoyama Gakuin University is widely recognized as one of Japan’s leading universities. There are two campuses that are 11 schools and 25 departments, with an enrollment of over 19,000 students. The original main campus is in Aoyama, a district in the heart of Tokyo and one of the city’s most fashionable and popular areas. The Sagamihara campus, a spacious site on the outskirts of Tokyo, was opened in 2003 to expand the university’s educational program and enhance academic achievement. This knowledge hub boasting state-of-the-art facilities is involved in joint research with prominent organizations, companies and universities from Japan and abroad.

Extensive International Student Support

Aoyama Gakuin University provides extensive academic, extracurricular, and professional support to international students. The International Center offers guidance and assistance for every aspect of student life, from applying and renewing visas to securing lodging. Faculty advisors and student tutors may be assigned to assist students with their studies. The university also offers numerous social and cultural experiences, including language exchange events and excursions to popular Japanese destinations, to foster organic links between international and domestic students. Professional development support and internship opportunities are available for students with the desire to launch a career in Japan after graduation.
