On August 10, 2018, Professor Atsuyuki Okabe of the School of Global Studies and Collaboration (GSC) at Aoyama Gakuin University received the IGU Laureat d’Honneur at the Regional Conference of the International Geographical Union (IGU) in Quebec, Canada.

Founded in 1922, the IGU is the largest academic geographical association in the world. The IGU Lauréat d’Honneur was established to “recognize individuals who have achieved particular distinction or who have rendered outstanding service in the work of the IGU or in international geography and environmental research” according to its website.

Professor Okabe has made significant contributions to the IGU National Committee (Japanese representative), IGU Mathematical Models Commission (full member), International GIScience Conference, and European GIS Association (AGILE). He also played a pivotal role in organizing Kyoto IGU Conference, as well as in the GIS Association of Japan, which has been the driving force for international exchange, including with other Asian GIS Associations. In addition, Professor Okabe has served as an editor or editorial board member of 11 international geographical journals. He is also the author of a number of books including "Spatial Tessellations", which has been cited in more than 5,600 international papers; "Islamic Area Studies with GIS" which was awarded the World Book Prize; and "Spatial Analysis along Networks" that opened new ground for geographical analysis. In 2007 the American Association of Geographers held special sessions to honor Professor Okabe.
