Economics Essay Contest and Student Prize Essays

Every year, we hold a contest for essays and papers related to economics. The winning essays in the 2021 contest were "The impact of sibling composition on personality," and the honorable mentions were "Changes in demand for video works during the COVID-19 pandemic," "Factors affecting medal winning at the Summer Olympics," "Environmental assessment of earthquake disasters in the Kashima region of Ibaraki Prefecture," "Causes of railway accidents and measures to improve them," "The impact of games without spectators on athletes' performance," "Analysis and policy recommendations for promoting cashless transactions," and "Can we use COVID-19 as an opportunity to promote decentralization?". The honorable mentions in the essay contest were "Spatial analysis of tower apartments in Sibuya Ward" and "Autonomous driving technology in Europe, the United States, and Japan." It is a great opportunity for students to improve their analytical skills, writing skills, and logical thinking.

Special Lectures

In order to support students aiming to obtain highly challenging national qualifications, such as tax accountant qualifications, we offer special courses in specialized fields outside of the classroom and provide detailed instruction.

■ Special lectures for tax accountants
In response to the growing interest of students in obtaining qualifications and to broaden the range of career options for the future, we have opened a special tax accountant course as an extracurricular activity separate from the regular curriculum of the Faculty of College of Economics. Tax accountants are professionals whose main duties include acting as agents or agents for tax declarations and applications, preparing and acting on behalf of others for tax documents, and providing tax consultations. Recently, they have also been involved in management consulting-type work, making this a very popular qualification.
This course is taught by lecturers from the Aogaku Accountants Club, which is made up of tax accountants and certified public accountants who graduated from our university, and in addition to lectures on bookkeeping, income tax law, inheritance tax law, and corporate tax law, they also provide friendly and thorough guidance for the exam. As the lecturers are all active at the forefront of the business, the lectures are full of real-life atmosphere and the guidance is based on reality, so for students who are interested in the profession of tax accountant or certified public accountant but have few opportunities to interact with practitioners, this special course should be the perfect opportunity to learn about the job and take on the challenge of obtaining the qualification.
This course also covers bookkeeping theory, making it a useful course not only for those aiming for the tax accountant exam, but also for those aiming for the Nissho Bookkeeping Certification Examination.

■ FP (Financial Planner) Qualification Course
As part of our support for students to obtain qualifications, we have opened a course to obtain the FP Level 3 qualification. FP qualifications are available from Level 1 to Level 3, and became a national qualification in 2002. To obtain the FP qualification, students must study six broad subjects: "Life Planning," "Risk Management (Insurance)," "Financial Asset Management," "Real Estate Utilization," "Tax Planning," and "Inheritance/Business Succession." It can be said that learning about money that will be necessary in the future while you are a student is essential to becoming an "independent member of society." In addition, many financial institutions such as banks, securities, and insurance, as well as the real estate industry, encourage their employees to obtain FP qualifications, so this course is perfect for students who wish to work in these industries. For those who have passed Level 3, we also offer a Level 2 exam preparation course.

■ Civil Service Exam Preparation Course
The course is aimed at students aiming to take the Type II National Civil Service Examination or equivalent national civil service or local senior civil service examinations, but students aiming to work for private companies can also take the course as exam preparation.
We provide civil service guidance from the first and second years, and then from May of the third year until just before the entrance exams, we run original courses in collaboration with vocational schools outside the university, focusing on general education and specialized exams.

■ Diplomatic and International Affairs Guidance Office
For students aiming to become diplomats or international civil servants, the "Diplomacy, International Public Affairs, and Journalism Guidance Room" has been established on Aoyama Campus, where special courses and lectures are held by full-time faculty members, and the organization provides exam preparation guidance and study assistance. Membership procedures are completed at the beginning of the academic year.

A new generation of analysis tool that visualizes data on electronic maps

A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a system that displays various location-related data such as population and facility locations on an electronic map, and allows searches and analysis. The fields in which GIS is used have expanded significantly, including urban planning and navigation, and in economics, GIS is now being used to analyze census data and publicly announced land price data. Our department provides full-scale GIS education, and with the active support of the university, we were the first in a Japanese university's economics department to set up a specialized computer room (GIS lab). The latest GIS software and data are always available, providing a cutting-edge learning environment.
