About grading

Grading

Academic performance will be evaluated by examinations administered for each course (written exams, reports, essays, oral exams, practical tests, or other methods designated by the instructor).

Our school grades are evaluated on a 100-point scale. A score of 60 or above is considered a pass, and the appropriate credits will be awarded.

A passing grade (AA, A, B, C) will appear on your transcript. A failing grade (XX, X) will also appear on your report card. However, for "Information Skills I" and designated overseas training, if the required credits are awarded, your transcript will show "RR" and your report card will show "Pass."

GPA

For students who are applying the curriculum after the 2009 academic year, the "GPA" is displayed on the grade report. GPA (Grade Point Average) refers to the average grade per credit of the subjects that a student has registered for. This is a global standard grading method that is widely used in Europe and the United States, and is used at our university for selecting candidates for grant scholarships and academic encouragement awards, selecting representatives for the graduation ceremony, and for entering the university's graduate school.
For each course taken, students are given grades such as A, B, C, XX, etc. GPA is calculated by converting these grades into a number and averaging them for each unit.
At our university, the following grades are given for each assessment:

University evaluation Rating
AA 4.0
A 3.0
B 2.0
C 1.0
XX (Fail) 0.0
X (Cannot be graded due to absence etc.) 0.0

The above grades are applied to the following formula to calculate your GPA.

GPA=  (Number of units of AA x 4 + Number of units of A x 3 + Number of units of B x 2 + Number of units of C x 1)

(Number of units of AA + number of units of A + number of units of B + number of units of C + number of units of XX + number of units of X)

*For the Faculty of Science and Engineering and School of Social Informatics, teacher training course subjects are not included in the GPA calculation.
*"Information Skills I" is not included in GPA calculation.

Grade Report

Students' grades will be announced in early March and mid-September via the "Grade Report" in the Student Portal Menu. If you wish to view the report from an off-campus PC, you must first register a SecureMatrix password on campus. (For details, please refer to the "Procedure for viewing grade reports from off-campus" in the Student Portal Menu.) Please print out your grade report and check the courses you have completed and their grades.

Grade survey

If you have any doubts about your grade evaluation, you can apply for a "grade investigation." This does not mean that you should easily ask the subject instructor to reconsider or change your grade. Please apply only if you have clear grounds for doubting your grade. Details will be posted on the "Student Portal." We will not respond to any inquiries by phone or requests outside the period.
