COURSE FEATURES Features of major courses

Politics, Diplomacy and Security Studies Course
Subject Name Features
International Security
Security is often likened to oxygen, in the sense that we cannot live without it. Security is essential to maintaining the stability and peace of the international community. In this class, for example, students will learn about the meaning of security, theories and policies on the causes of war, nuclear deterrence and strategy, alliances, crisis management, arms control and disarmament, civil war, economic sanctions, preventive diplomacy, and Japan's security policy.
Introduction to Pan-Pacific Politics
This course provides a historical and theoretical understanding of international relations in the Asia-Pacific region, which is expected to have a major impact on the future of not only Japan but the world. It also conveys the "on-the-ground feel" of a person in charge who frequently visits the region, encouraging students to take an interest and understand the region.
Diplomatic History
This class will refer to historical diplomatic documents and examine the relations between major powers in order to grasp the factors behind cooperation and conflict between nations, as well as provide students with historical knowledge and perspectives that will serve as a basis for understanding the current international situation and judging the validity of various theories in international politics.
Global Governance Course
Subject Name Features
Introduction to Global Governance
International politics, which used to be concerned only with war and trade, has changed dramatically with globalization. New problems such as global warming, financial instability, and peace (nation-building) in developing countries are becoming more serious, but it is difficult to deal with them under the traditional international system. We will consider what kind of governance is necessary and possible.
International Peace and Cooperation
Regarding the resolution of regional conflicts in Asia and Africa, in the first term the course will examine the role of UN peacekeeping operations, focusing on "negative peace" (the cessation of physical violence), while in the second term the course will examine the gap between the ideal of peacebuilding and reality in order to achieve "positive peace" (the removal of deep-rooted problems in the social structure).
Global Environmental Politics
Global environmental issues that concern the basis of human survival, such as global warming and biodiversity, are challenges that must be resolved through collaboration among governments, economic organizations, labor unions, women's organizations, indigenous peoples, and various other private organizations through the formation of a global international framework.
