Event description/
Walterina Markova (1924-2005) was a Filipino person who made public the story of wartime sexual assaults that Markova went through at the hands of Japanese soldiers during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines. Markova's testimony is documented in several media appearances and interviews and has been the subject of Gil Portes's 2000 feature film Markova: Comfort Gay. Despite offering a rare account of the Japanese military's trans misogyny as well as club performances, and queer community under the occupation, Markova's stories have not enjoyed much critical attention in Japan.
This event offers an academic inquiry into trans misogyny in the period of Japanese occupation of the Philippines, as well as into modalities of living that nonetheless existed under the military rule. Taking the film Markova: Comfort Gay and the testimony of Walterina Markova as starting points, the speakers’ interventions offer historical and contemporary understandings on the nexus of trans misogyny, gender discourse of military occupation, geography, media representation, and queer performance. This event will be available both in English and Japanese through an effort of translation, and we hope to intervene in narrations (or erasures) of this history.

“Retro-Trans: Markova and the Discomfiture of Cis Projection”
What happens when cis cinema acts as a proxy vision of the trans past? Is the sufferance purported as trans substituted as well? What could a trans reading of this cis projected cinematic imaginary of transness look like, especially if transness is masqueraded as queer performance within national history? How can a trans feminist decolonial methodology recuperate trans feminine authorship from the extractions of cis gay cinema? What could this error of the image teach us about the origins of transfemicidal tactics? Gil M. Portes’s Markova: Comfort Gay (2000) will be the specimen of such a critique.

“Remaindered Pleasure: Markova and the Impossibility of Historicising Queer Performances”
Historicising queer performances is an impossible task, and this impossibility is normatively attributed to queer histories’ purported absence in the archives, and to the ephemerality of queer practices, whose generational transmission through oral modalities has left them undocumented. I contend, however, that this impossibility is a challenge brought about not by sheer lack, but the excessiveness of such queer performances, which makes them uncontainable, ungovernable. In this presentation, I turn to the archives of Markova’s interviews to search for the spillovers of wartime queer performance narratives in the Philippines. I am interested in unpacking what Markova’s acts of storytelling and memorialising might contribute towards a queer performance historiography in the Philippines. While Markova’s accounts of being a ‘comfort gay’ were met with suspicion from the public and the media, here, I focus on searching for what I call remaindered pleasure—forms of worldmaking that exceed the archives and refuse to be contained by normative framing of suffering—drawing on Neferti Tadiar’s notion of remaindered life, or practices of life-making the evade subsumption into a lifetime of disposability. Turning to Markova, then, I argue, allows us to glimpse a thriving queer performance culture, imbued with moments of jouissance amidst the brutality of war and colonial violence, before the supposed earliest documentation of female impersonation in the Philippines in the 1970s.

“Mapping Markova’s Manila: Queer Survival and Placemaking in World War II”
Markova’s life reveals not only the complexities of being queer under oppressive military rule, but also the vital geography of survival. This lecture maps the physical “safe spaces” of queer Manila during World War II. Drawing from Markova’s story of hope, I trace historical landmarks that offered protection, community, and expression, such as the night clubs around Padre Faura street to Rizal Park and Dewey Boulevard where they cruised at night. By examining these sites, this lecture reveals how wartime survival strategies fostered legacies of resilience, showing how these spaces continue to influence modern queer lives.

“The “Woman” in the Woman Question: Reckoning with constructions of womanhood in studies of Japan-Occupied Philippines”
Developments in gender studies that question binary approaches to gender prompt feminist historians to revisit wartime women’s history. While the history of war has benefited from an examination of gender’s role in the language of power and violence, it is also important not to take ideas of “womanhood” at face value. This is imperative if one remembers that it was also a rhetoric of binaries that shaped women’s material and bodily realities across histories, including the violences inflicted upon them. This was the case with Japan’s wartime mandate for the women of Asia to go back to their “eastern” roots and to shun their former occupiers’ “western” influences—the logic of which Filipino women cleverly utilized to question Japan’s imperialistic mission. Women’s history in the Philippines, however, has not afforded the same rigor of analysis to those who deviate from assumed forms of womanhood. How does one, for instance, start to admit that the violences inflicted upon comfort gays was a product of the same imperialistic forces? This work takes a step into this reckoning by tracing, first, the imperialist and essentialist construction of the woman and naming its preoccupations and consequent violences; and, secondly, the failures of Filipino women’s history to make room for excesses that elude its own preoccupations.

“Occupation and Trans Misogyny: Reading Diaries and Memoirs by Japanese Military Personnel Stationed in Manila”
Publications of diaries and memoirs by Japanese military personnel stationed in the Philippines constitute part of the Japanese colonial experience: part travel writing, part war record, these publications paint a particular image of their intervention in the geography of the occupied territories. This presentation discusses fragments from diaries and memoirs of three writers (an army officer, an engineer, and a member of the propaganda corps) who recorded their encounters with local trans feminine people in occupied Manila. I argue that these accounts show us traces of trans misogyny through their descriptions of, and actions against, those whom they variously called “male prostitutes”, “men in women’s clothes”, “binabayi”, etc.
