Educational and research objectives and three policies

Educational and research objectives and three policies

We would like to introduce the educational and research objectives and three policies of Mechanical Engineering Course Graduate School of Science and Engineering Aoyama Gakuin University Graduate School.

Educational and research objectives

This course aims to train researchers and engineers who can create devices and systems with excellent functions that contribute to the sustainable development of humankind. In other words, we provide education and research that gives students a deep understanding of the shapes, mechanisms, and mechanical actions of things from a broad perspective of energy, environment, safety, and ethics. Furthermore, we aim to integrate hardware, such as machines, with software, such as intelligence, and provide students with advanced information processing capabilities and advanced measurement techniques. We also foster students' overall abilities through research guidance, and we nurture students who can discover and solve problems on their own.

Three Policies for the Master's Program

  • Diploma Policy (Policy for Completion Certification and Awarding of Degrees)

The Mechanical Creativity Course awards a Master's of Engineering to students in the Specialized Frontier Program who meet the following requirements, and a Master's of Science to students in the Integrated Frontier Program.
    1. In the "Specialized Frontier Program," students must be enrolled in this course for at least two years (four semesters), take common subjects for the major (compulsory and elective subjects), core elective subjects for the course (compulsory electives), special experiments and seminars in science and engineering (compulsory), and Scientific and Technical English I (compulsory), obtain the required credits, submit a dissertation through proper research, and pass the examination. However, for foreign language certification, if credits have been obtained for Scientific and Technical English I, those credits will be used to certify the degree. In addition, for students who have achieved outstanding research results, one year (two semesters) or more of enrollment will be sufficient.
    2. The review and examination of the master's thesis will determine whether the research is academically novel, original, and has potential for application that can contribute to society. It will also determine whether the student who applied for the degree has the ability to plan, implement, and be accountable for the results of future research and development.
    3. In the "Interdisciplinary Frontier Program," the degree is awarded upon completion of the specialized common subject Science and Technology English I, as well as special experiments and seminars in science and engineering, and specialized interdisciplinary seminars (all of which are compulsory), as well as major common subjects, specialized major subjects, and other elective subjects, and the acquisition of the required credits.

  • Curriculum Policy (Policy for creating and implementing educational courses)

The educational programs will be organized into a "Specialized Frontier Program" and a "Complex Frontier Program."

    "Specialized Frontier Program"
The curriculum is designed to enable students to study the four main areas of material mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and mechanical mechanics, as well as science, technology, and society, the environment, welfare, and safety and danger issues.
Specifically, students will learn special theories on fundamental and applied engineering problems, such as mechanical mechanics, material mechanics, ultrasonic and laser measurement, multibody control, machine tools, energy systems, physical gas dynamics, heat transfer engineering, fluid mechanics, aerospace engineering, and advanced production technology. In addition, students will learn environmental, safety, and ethical perspectives, such as science, technology, and society, welfare engineering, environmental science, safety engineering, problem-solving exercises, special theories on research and development, intellectual property, and science and technology ethics. Through these, students will gain the specialized knowledge necessary to conduct research independently. In addition, scientific and technical English is a compulsory subject, and students will also acquire the English proficiency necessary to present their research abroad.

Through comprehensive research guidance, students will acquire the ability to independently conduct research based on their thinking, judgment, and insight, which will be cultivated through gathering information on their specialized fields, formulating research plans, developing test equipment and analysis software, and carrying out research using these. Students will also acquire the ability to express themselves through numerous opportunities to present their research both at the university and abroad.

Through research activities, students will develop the interest and attitude necessary for society when they enter the world, in areas outside their field of expertise, such as the environment, safety, and ethics, so that they can carry out their research independently. By providing internship opportunities both in Japan and overseas, students will be able to experience a global environment and develop the desire to play an active role on a global stage as members of society.

    "Complex Frontier Program"
Students will study a wide range of specialized fields across multiple courses and develop broad-based specialist knowledge in the research and analysis of science and technology, including the relationship between society, culture, and science and technology.

  • Admission Policy

    ■ Knowledge and skills
    - In the Specialized Frontier Program, students will be able to understand the content of foreign languages, mathematics, specialized subjects, etc. necessary to study a specialized field, have knowledge equivalent to a university graduate, and understand the fundamentals of mechanical engineering.
    - The Complex Frontier Program requires basic academic ability to acquire a wide range of specialized knowledge and foreign language knowledge equivalent to a university graduate.

■Thinking ability, judgment ability, expressive ability
At a level equivalent to university graduation, students are able to consider things from multiple perspectives and logically, and express and communicate their own thoughts in an easily understandable manner.

    ■ Motivation, interest, and attitude
Students who understand the characteristics of the course, are interested in manufacturing, and have the desire and interest to contribute to society by utilizing their specialized knowledge and skills.

Three Policies for the Doctoral Program

  • Diploma Policy (Policy for Completion Certification and Awarding of Degrees)

The Mechanical Creativity Course will award a Doctor of Engineering degree to students who meet the following requirements.

    1) Knowledge and skills
    - Possess the specialized knowledge and research capabilities to combine a wide range of specialized knowledge with original research achievements.
    - Have acquired the English skills to present research abroad and exchange information.
②Thinking ability, judgment ability, expressive ability
    - Possess the ability to think, make judgments, and express oneself, and be recognized as an engineer or researcher with a broad perspective who can combine advanced specialized knowledge with the results of their own research and contribute to the development of cutting-edge science and technology.
    ③ Motivation, interest and attitude
    - In addition to the desire to play an active role globally as a member of society, students have acquired the personality and high ethical standards worthy of a doctoral degree, as well as the humanity that can contribute to the development of science and technology.

  • Curriculum Policy (Policy for creating and implementing educational courses)

The curriculum is designed to provide students with the opportunity to acquire the rich academic knowledge that will serve as the foundation for integrating a wide range of specialized knowledge with their own original research achievements, to produce research achievements worthy of a doctoral degree, and to receive research guidance that will enable them to acquire the ability to engage in academic discussion.
In the doctoral dissertation writing guidance, students will select cutting-edge research themes and methodologies in the field of mechanical engineering, and produce original research results. In addition, students will improve their English skills by presenting their research abroad.

In order to cultivate the ability to become independent engineers and researchers who can contribute to the development of cutting-edge science and technology in the future, we provide a research environment where students can actively participate in academic activities both at home and abroad to collect information on the latest science and technology, and social activities aimed at understanding the needs of the industrial world, thereby improving their thinking and judgment. We also provide opportunities for students to conduct research together with master's and undergraduate students, improving their cooperation, expressiveness, and leadership skills.

In order to enable students to carry out original research, we foster through research activities an interest and attitude that will be necessary when they enter society in issues such as the environment, safety, and ethics, outside of their specialization. By providing internship opportunities both in Japan and overseas, we enable students to experience a global environment, conduct research at an international level, and foster a desire to play an active role on a global scale as members of society.
