FEATURES

  1. The origins and challenges of legal education

Aoyama Gakuin University Faculty of Law-AOYAMA LAW- was created in 1959 with only a law department. The first department, General Manager, was a great authority on private international law, and a rich international education was offered from the very beginning of Faculty of Law. In the 60 years since then, we have experienced the introduction of two departments and a course system, and consolidation into Department of Law. In April 2022, we will adopt a new two-department system, and Department of Law will return to the "starting point" of AOYAMA LAW's education and research activities to pursue law education in a new era. The new department will be located in the center of the campus.

  2. Mutually-oriented legal education

AOYAMA LAW's origins lie in two-way learning, where teachers and students face each other and think together, based on the Christian spirit. In the "Introductory Seminar" seminar, which begins immediately after enrollment, students learn social science ways of thinking, which are the foundation of law, while teaching and learning from each other in small groups. In addition, the compulsory subject "Introduction to Law" in the first semester of the first year is offered at an appropriate scale according to the subject's objectives, carefully building a strong foundation in law. From the second year onwards, there are many opportunities for two-way learning, such as "Basic Law Seminars."

  3. "Slow and steady wins the race" in legal education - Taking a detour is the best way to get there

Another starting point of AOYAMA LAW is to not neglect the fundamentals of legal studies. In order to acquire a perspective that allows students to understand not only the law as it is fixed in its provisions, but also the law as it is constantly being created in reality, we have repositioned subjects such as legal philosophy, comparative law, legal history, and legal issues in modern society as elective compulsory courses for first-year students. In an age where the efficiency of learning is emphasized, Department of Law at AOYAMA LAW adheres to the spirit of "slow and steady wins the race" and values the learning that makes law a "living thing."

  4. Legal education that nurtures great trees

The third origin of AOYAMA LAW is that it has always valued the opportunity for students to come into contact with a variety of legal fields. Law is like a large tree, with basic law rooted deep in the ground, a thick trunk growing high into the sky, and a wide variety of vibrant branches and leaves growing from that trunk. At AOYAMA LAW's Department of Law, students can choose subjects from a balanced range of legal fields, mainly business, public, international, and foreign law, allowing them to build their own studies according to their interests and future plans.

PICK UP LECTURES

Contemporary Legal Practice

Lawyers active in various legal fields will give lectures on the role that lawyers play in resolving legal issues and disputes. By learning about the actual activities of lawyers both in and out of the courtroom, students will be able to understand the role that lawyers play in modern society. At the same time, by listening to the voices of those in the "field," students will be exposed to practical examples of "application of law and interpretation of law" that they learn in other law courses, with the aim of bridging the gap between academia and practice.

Legal Writing

This subject focuses on having students actually write essays using specific questions (case studies) as material. Multiple courses are offered in each of the major legal fields, such as civil law, commercial law, and constitutional law. In addition to training your ability to write essays, you can also acquire the ability to extract legal issues from real-life cases, interpret the law, and develop methods to solve the problems. This is perfect not only for preparing for the bar exam, but also for those aiming for a career that requires them to write documents to deal with legal issues, such as public servants or corporate legal department staff.

PICK UP SEMINARS

Yukari Yasumi Seminar

"Civil Procedure Law" In the civil procedure law seminar, students are divided into groups to give presentations on key issues in civil procedure law, using short stories based on civil lawsuits as teaching materials, deepening their knowledge together.
