Courses for Exchange Students

Our university offers the following courses for exchange students:
From the 2024 academic year, students will be divided into regular Japanese language courses and extracurricular Japanese language classes taught in English based on their Japanese language proficiency. Japanese language courses are optional.

・Japanese (A), (B), (C), (D) [Regular Courses]: once a week, a total of four times a week (1 credit each, a total of four credits)
・Japanese Society and Culture (A)-(G): Once a week (2 credits each)
・Japanese Studies: once a week (2 credits)

Regular Japanese language courses are divided into multiple levels, and levels are determined by factors such as the results of a Japanese language placement test administered prior to the start of study.

Other elective subjects

In principle, exchange students can take courses in any faculty. However, there are some courses that they cannot take.

To select the courses you wish to take, please use the "Course Content Search" to select the courses you wish to take. The course content search allows you to search for courses by time, day of the week, keywords, etc. For example, if you are looking for courses related to business management, you can search for the word "business management" in the keyword search.
Also, if you use the "Timetable Search" function to search for the campus (Aoyama), the day of the week (Wednesday), the period (3rd period), and the term (first half), all the courses for that time period will be displayed. Be sure to select the correct term (first half, second half, or full year). Also, be careful not to have the courses you want to take overlap at the same time.

Please note that exchange students cannot take foreign language courses or teacher training courses for regular students other than Japanese language courses for exchange students. For example, French, Chinese, German, etc.

Courses taught in Japanese (Undergraduate):

If they have sufficient Japanese language proficiency and there are no restrictions on the subjects they can take, exchange students can take classes taught in Japanese alongside regular students.
Exchange students select the faculty they wish to study at the time of application, but can generally take classes in faculties other than the one they belong to (please note that there may be restrictions depending on the subject).

Course registration schedule

Course registration will be done via the on-campus system during the designated registration period. Details will be explained at the orientation after you arrive in Japan.

*There is a "course cancellation period" during which you can cancel courses you have registered for. During this period, you can delete courses you have registered for, but you cannot add courses. In addition, even after deleting courses, undergraduate students must still be registered for 14 or more credits.

Japanese Language Courses for Exchange Students

Japanese language courses are optional.
Regarding the regular Japanese language courses, international students at levels 1 to 3 are required to take Japanese A to D as a set (either they take all of A to D or they don't). For example, they cannot choose not to take just one of Japanese A to D.
International students at levels 4 to 7 can take only some of the courses, such as only A or only A and C, but they cannot move up to a higher level in the following semester in any courses other than those they have taken.
* Auditing Japanese language courses (taking classes without registering for them) is not permitted.

Exchange students who are studying abroad only for the first semester

International students who are studying at Aoyama Gakuin University only in the first semester cannot take "year-round courses" (classes that last for one year). Please note that even if you attend "year-round courses", you will not receive credits unless you attend classes in the second semester.

Subjects with limited enrollment

Some courses offered at Aoyama Gakuin University have a limit on the number of students allowed to enroll. For more information, please refer to the orientation for exchange students after your arrival in Japan. If you wish to enroll in a restricted course, you must first apply during the designated period.
Please note that restricted courses cannot be cancelled (withdrawn) once you have been approved to take them.
