Department Overview (Department of History)
FEATURESDepartment Overview
From the Department Chief
You have all taken "history" classes up until high school. You have also come into contact with history in various ways, such as through anime, manga, and games. So what do you learn in a university Department of History? Do you just memorize the history you learned up until high school in detail?
In Department of History, in order to understand the "past," which is something different from the present, we critically read "historical documents" and "artifacts" and explore "historical facts." The method for doing so is the academic field of "history." While it overlaps with the history studies you have learned up to high school, studying history also exposes you to a new academic field.
Using historiography to interpret history in a subjective way leads to the "weaving" of a new history. This means that we can look at the "present" through a "dialogue" with the "past" and at the same time reimagine the "future."
Our Department of History is the perfect environment for studying history. I look forward to learning with you all.
Masashi Warita, Chief Department of History
History
Department of History in College of Literature Aoyama Gakuin University University, which was established in April 1968, celebrated its 50th anniversary in April 2018. Over those 50 years, Department of History has produced nearly 7,000 graduates.
Since its founding 50 years ago, Department of History has upheld the following ideals: "To develop Department of History as a new research and educational forum with a global perspective, to demonstrate its distinctive features in the area of East-West cultural exchange, to contribute to the development of historical studies, and to educate students with a rich historical literacy" (Notification of Expansion of College of Literature Department of History of Letters).
In other words, while Department of History in College of Literature Aoyama Gakuin University maintains the specialized fields of Japanese history, Eastern history, Western history, and archaeology as the basis of research, it also places emphasis on a global historical perspective and aims to develop the department into a place of interdisciplinary study that transcends disciplines.
The current Department of History stands on the back of efforts to come closer to these founding ideals.
I am confident that the four years studying in Department of History will equip you with the wisdom to respond to the dramatic changes occurring in modern society due to rapid internationalization and developments in information technology.
As has been the case with previous graduates of Department of History, I look forward to learning about the rich knowledge and traditions accumulated by our predecessors and to studying and conducting research alongside all of you who are motivated to use that knowledge to play an active role in society.
