Academic Writing Center
[Director] Toshihiko Nozue (Professor, College of Education, Psychology and Human Studies)

The Academic Writing Center (AWC) is a facility located in the library that opened at the Aoyama Campus in 2017 and at Sagamihara Campus in 2018. It has maintained a high utilization rate since its opening, and we are aware of the high demand for it.
With the goal of "supporting the development of independent writers" in anticipation of post-graduation, AWC has specially trained tutors (graduate students) who provide individual consultations on writing academic papers, reports, etc. for each student. In order to improve "writing skills" in response to an internationalized society, we support not only Japanese but also English writing. In 2022, in light of the COVID-19 situation, we conducted consultations both in person and online.
AWC is also actively conducting research into the support and education of academic writing. Starting in 2021, we will expand on our annual report and publish a journal called "Writing Research."
We will continue to work hard every day, striving to become a center based on the servant leadership spirit.

Environmental Safety Management Center
[Director] Hiromasa Inatsumi (Vice President and Professor, School of Social Informatics)

The Environmental Safety Center aims to protect the living environment of local residents and ensure the safety of students and faculty during experimental research by taking measures against environmental risks arising from educational and research activities that use chemical substances, complying with legal requirements, and carrying out educational and awareness-raising activities for students and faculty based on various laws and regulations related to environmental conservation and safety and health.

Civic Engagement Center
Aoyama Gakuin University Civic Engagement Center
[Director] Yasuhiro Iijima (Professor, School of Social Informatics)

On April 1, 2022, Aoyama Gakuin University Volunteer Center was reborn as Aoyama Gakuin University Civic Engagement Center. The Volunteer Center, which opened in 2016, was established with the aim of cultivating talented individuals with rich humanity and creativity who can demonstrate leadership through volunteer activities. In the future, the center will expand the scope of its activities beyond volunteering to include civic engagement (citizen collaboration) and utilize it in education.
In fiscal 2022, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, we implemented the Green Up Project, a city clean-up project, sign language communication courses, nature experience programs (Nanayama Green Space Revitalization Project), Sobudai Housing Complex Revitalization Project, online Japanese salons, Sibuya Ward version of the children's cafeteria "Children's Table," an introduction to international cooperation planners, dementia supporter training courses (Sibuya Ward and Sagamihara City versions), and disaster prevention volunteer courses. In addition, as social businesses, we also carried out activities such as the Kanazawa Outsider Art Project, Shibuya Font (supporting independence by utilizing the design sense of people with disabilities), and Sagamihara City Fujino District Local Gacha.
We have also started The Aoyama Standard Course "Volunteer and Citizen Collaboration Theory." This is an activity that aims to provide an academic opportunity for students to reexamine the activities of the Civic Engagement Center and gain knowledge about citizen collaboration and volunteering. We are also cooperating in implementing "Volunteer Activities as Service Learning" and "Service Learning I and II" as learning opportunities for students to experience citizen collaboration and volunteering.

Aoyama History Research Institute
Aoyama Gakuin Historical Research Institute
[Director] Kazuyuki Kobayashi (Professor, College of Literature)

Aoyama The Institute for the History of Gakuin aims to contribute to the development of the history of education, the history of ideas, and modern history by analyzing and examining the historical materials collected and held by Aoyama Gakuin, and by studying the historical role played by Aoyama Gakuin in modern Japanese society at large, and by examining the influence of Christian culture in modern Japan. In addition, we aim to objectively clarify the founding spirit of the institute and its historical position, and to support the development and advancement of education on the history of the institute at Aoyama Gakuin University and other schools established by the institute.
In fiscal year 2022, we compiled the 150th anniversary of the founding of the institute in 2024 by compiling the "Aoyama 150-year history of the institute," a general history volume I. This history includes the history of the three schools from which Aoyama Gakuin originated, the development of Aoyama Gakuin during the Meiji and Taisho periods, and the great trials caused by the Great Kanto Earthquake and the war, from the start of missionary work in the early Meiji period. From this you can get a sense of the history of Aoyama Gakuin as it developed through crises. Please take a look.
